Misuse of Your Company’s Software Volume License Keys Can Cause Big Headaches

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Thursday 24 September 2009 11:32 pm

It sounds harmless enough: An employee uses software at work and wants to continue using it at home. So he takes a copy of the software home, installs it and then validates it using his employer’s volume license key (VLK)-a special code that software-makers issue to organizations with volume license agreements to allow activation of their software. But what happens when the employee shares that code with a friend? Or posts it to an Internet discussion board so all his friends can use it? To those in the software industry, there are no shades of gray. Whether it’s used by one person or 1 million people, a stolen VLK amounts to stolen software, and the ramifications can cause major problems for a business, a library, a university, or any organization that needs its software up and running.
Microsoft Corp. estimates that the majority of counterfeit software in use today employs VLKs that have been stolen, leaked or inadvertently misused. For the organization whose key is leaked and then used in piracy, remedying that situation can be time-consuming and a headache for IT administrators tasked to deal with it. The software company must issue a replacement key, and then the organization must deploy the new product key again-across the entire enterprise. Of course, the amount of IT overhead involved depends on the size of the organization, but it can be expensive in terms of time and effort for the IT department. So what can organizations do to better protect themselves from this problem? Most important, they should strictly control access to their VLKs. If new volume license agreements are issued, organizations should also use the new VLKs quickly. The better control they have over their VLKs, the less exposure they have to the risks of misuse. For unsuspecting users who receive counterfeit software through no fault of their own, some companies have services and promotional offers to help them obtain genuine software, such as the Genuine Microsoft Software Web site at http://www.micro soft.com/genuine. According to those in the software industry, if you discover that your software is not genuine or that your VLK is no longer under your control, you should contact the licensing specialist or account manager who handled your software purchase.

Mission-Critical: Technology Helps Nation’s Largest Organ And Tissue Bank Save And Enhance Lives

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Thursday 24 September 2009 12:22 pm

Technology can seem so commonplace sometimes it’s easy to forget how many crucial services depend on it. Virginia Beach, Va.-based LifeNet (http://www.lifenet.org), the nation’s largest nonprofit, full-service organ donation agency and tissue banking system, is one example of the necessity of choosing the right IT products and services mix, in its case to support a mission-critical function: saving and improving lives.
Each day, LifeNet receives notice via its donor call centers of approximately 12 to 15 newly deceased individuals across the U.S. identified as donors. Given that one person can save seven lives through organ donation and impact more than 50 others with tissue transplants, it is crucial to accurately track data and effectively communicate with a broad network of field staff, medical institutions, transportation companies and others to ensure the process goes smoothly. All told, the work of LifeNet’s staff affects thousands of lives each year.
A Delicate Balance When considerations of “human resources” relate to actual, life-giving organs and tissues, the familiar business technology concept of downtime gains a whole new meaning. Even with the company’s patented profusion pumps in place to help preserve organ viability, some tissues live a mere four hours outside the body, requiring LifeNet to meet exceedingly tight deadlines. While field staff rushes to the hospital to work with family members and procure tissues, others must find suitable matches and ensure that operating rooms and transplant surgeons are standing by. Once tissue is recovered, activities such as precise inventory management and tracking, and coordination of quick and accurate delivery, are crucial. Recovered tissue is processed at LifeNet’s headquarters, then distributed across the country for procedures, which can include knee and limb replacements, spinal fusions, heart valve replacements and countless others. Life-Enabling IT ProcessesAccording to Steve Lenz, vice president of Information Systems for LifeNet, “It’s all about the ability of our staff to access each other and accurate data, anywhere, anytime. So much of what we do is basic communication, which seems simple on the surface. What goes on behind the scenes is another story.”LifeNet chose a solution leveraging Microsoft Dynamics GP and other key, familiar Microsoft products, allowing the organization to seamlessly track the intake, classification and distribution of organs and tissues from its headquarters and five remote locations -all processes that were previously scattered across multiple systems. The new integrated system can be accessed via both centralized and Web-based tools, and also interfaces with messaging technology to be accessed by field staff across the U.S. via PDA devices. The new streamlined process has also freed some of LifeNet’s administrative staff to focus on other core activities.
Donation EducationAccording to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), more than 92,000 Americans currently await a lifesaving organ transplant, and tens of thousands more each year require a tissue transplant. Thus, educating the public about the importance of donation is also integral to LifeNet’s mission. Technology is central to this outreach as well, via the organization’s national donor education Web site, http://www.lifenet.org, which includes links for donor sign-up around the U.S., as well as http://www.save7lives.org, a Web site aimed at recruiting donors in LifeNet’s home state of Virginia. A New Take on ROIClearly, technology infrastructure is just one piece of the process that allows LifeNet to perform its critical public service, as well it should be. Technology should work for businesses, not the other way around. All types of businesses and service organizations are getting smart about what a truly integrated technology platform can do to free them to focus on what they do best. Said Lenz, “So much of what we can see and do is new. We’ve never had many of these capabilities before. I don’t think we could possibly overestimate the impact of what that means, when you consider how many lives can be touched by the work we do every day.”Now that’s what I’d call a good return on investment.

Microsoft Word Is Great But I Wish I Could…

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Thursday 24 September 2009 3:47 am

Microsoft Word is all singing, all dancing. Truly a great product which has made the lives of professional writers and students vastly more productive. Most of us however are not professional writers. We only use Word to type an occasional missive or and article now and then. We don’t need or use 90% of the bells and whistles. Unfortunately, some of these built in bells and whistles are designed to impose themselves and often like to blow loudly in our ears whether we asked for it or not.
Research shows there are three common pet hate ‘features’ that most average users would rather turn off if only they knew how. This is a cheat sheet for such users. A. How do I stop Word from helping me type?
Word checks spelling and grammar as you type. When these features are on, spelling and grammar that Word does not recognize are underlined sternly with wavy red and green lines.
To turn off Word’s various automatic checking features:
1. From the Tools menu, pick ‘AutoCorrect’ (or AutoCorrect Options). Then click on the ‘AutoCorrect’ tab.

2. Uncheck the boxes for the AutoCorrect items that you want to disable.

3. Do the same on the ‘AutoFormat As You Type’ tab.
4. On the ‘AutoText’ tab, uncheck the ‘Show AutoComplete tip’ box.

5. From the Tools menu, pick ‘Options’ then click on the tabs and uncheck any boxes for features that you want to disable.
B. How do I tell the Office Assistant to go take a walk?

1. Click on the Office Assistant, then click on ‘Options’.
2. Uncheck the ‘Use Office Assistant’ box.
You can also customize the behavior of the Office Assistant by checking or clearing the checkboxes on the ‘Options’ tab.
If you later decide that you rather miss the lovable Assistant, you can easily bring him back by choosing ‘Show the Office Assistant’ from the Help menu.
C. How do I turn off the automatic URLs?
Word likes to convert all URLs and email addresses in your document into active hyperlinks. If you’d rather not, then here’s how to turn off that feature:
1. From the Tools menu, Choose ‘AutoCorrect’ (or AutoCorrect Options)
2. Click on ‘AutoFormat As You Type’ tab.

3. Under ‘Replace As You Type’, uncheck the ‘Internet and network paths with hyperlink’ box.
Note that this setting only applies to what you subsequently type. If you forgot to turn off AutoCorrect before you started and you end up with a document full of hyperlinks that you don’t want, you can disable them, either one at a time, or all at once. To turn a link off, right-click on the link, select ‘Hyperlink’ from the pop-up menu, and then select ‘Remove Hyperlink’. To remove all links from the document, choose Select All from the Edit menu or press [Ctrl]+[A], and then press [Ctrl]+[6] to remove all hyperlinks.
Most Word features can be turned off or on from the ‘Tools’ menu. From this menu, the ‘Options’ command brings up a screen with several tabs where you can make all sorts of changes to Word’s behavior. The ‘Customize’ command lets you to change Word’s menus and toolbars. The ‘View’ menu also has some great options for changing the look of the Word screen.

Microsoft Word 2007 review

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Wednesday 23 September 2009 10:32 am

Microsoft Word 2007Microsoft office 2007 a great upgrade from office 2003. The whole look is changed to more user friendly interface with clearly distinct sections such as Insert tables, clipart, page layout, references, mailing, review content and view content. So it is very useful to users as they don’t have to find them in all in one tool box as in office 2003.
There are many more useful upgrades. Whenever you make a change in current configuration it shows preview and you can easily select whether it is looking good or not for example if you want to change the font then just highlight words and as you move your mouse arrow over different font sizes it shows the changes that will be made immediately.
Insert tab contains almost everything that you may need to insert in word file
1) Tables of custom size columns and rows
2) Picture
3) Clipart, shapes, smart art ( It contains lot of collection of symbols which you can use to make project reports, analysis reports etc) charts, and page brakes
4) You get option to insert hyperlink, bookmarks, cross reference
5) Header, footer and page numbers
6) And many more features such as word art, date and time, signature line, equations, symbolsAll the things are sorted and it is very easy to locate and use themPage Layout tab contains everything about page layout, settings, margins, spacing between the lines position of picture etc. This section is similar to word 2003 with extra options for page background setting and themesReferences Tab helps you mostly to make a report where you require to create table of content, footnotes, citation and bibliography, captions, Index and table of Authorities. Microsoft Navision Implementation, Integration & Customization – Sгo Paulo ERP market notes

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Tuesday 22 September 2009 5:24 pm

Microsoft Navision is localized and translated into Brazilian Portuguese to be efficient MRP/ERP/accounting solution for Brazilian enterprises as well as for subsidiaries or manufacturing facilities of multinational corporations and companies, participating in international business. We plan to inform potential customer about the situation on Brazilian ERP market and particularly in Sao Paulo, based on our consulting practice experience. We also plan similar publications on Axapta, SAP Business One, Oracle E-Business Suite (also often referred as Oracle Financials, or Oracle Applications)• Sгo Paulo Economy. Being largest South American megapolis, Sao Paulo and the state provide approximately 75% of nation output in machinery, rubber, electrical products & goods. Heavy industries include motor vehicles, electrical equipment, computers, chemicals. Consumer goods: textiles, food processing, china & pottery, household utensils, furniture. • State production centers. Campinas, Sorocaba, Jundiaн, Cubatгo, and Ribeirгo Prкto – last couple of decades production facilities moved out of city of Sao Paulo to other locations in the state. The city of Sao Paulo has traditional businesses: banking centers, finance, corporate headquarters, etc. The city also serves a rich agricultural hinterland, one of the most productive agricultural areas in the nation. Soybeans and especially coffee are of great commercial significance. • Navision. Microsoft Business Solutions has several ERP applications – Microsoft Navision, Great Plains, Axapta, Solomon, Microsoft CRM, etc. Microsoft is on the way of so-called Project Green realization and you may of heard the new names: Microsoft Dynamics NAV (Navision), Microsoft Dynamics AX (Axapta), etc. Navision Software was purchased by Microsoft in earlier 21st century and before that Navision had very strong positions in Europe, especially in Manufacturing MRP & corporate ERP market. In our opinion Manufacturing module implementation is critical for Sao Paulo market. • Localization. Microsoft probed several applications on Brazilian market: Solomon (2002-2003), then Great Plains (our company was chosen as official partner for Brazilian version localization), but later on the final decision was made on Navision (Axapta will be also available in it localized version in 2006). One of the challenges for ERP localization for Brazilian market is unique tax code. Unique tax code probably supports strong positions of local ERP packages, such as Microsiga, RM, etc. • Customization. Navision has its own proprietary language C/Side and currently Microsoft recommends MS SQL Server as the database platform. Plus the future customization directions will be focused on XML web services and developers will be deploying Microsoft Visual Studio.Net • Integration. Considering MS SQL Server platform – software programmers have all the spectrum of integration technologies: ODBC, JDBC, Microsoft will be moving more functionality to business portal – where Navision logic will be called through the sets of stored procedures and be exposed through SDK. Open MS SQL Server technologies gives you SQL based reporting, you can deploy such industry standard tools as Crystal Reports, MS SQL Server Reporting services, etc. You can always appeal to our help and expertise – in our Sao Paulo office we have all Navision expertise, plus Microsoft CRM, MS Great Plains, Axapta, SAP, Oracle, Lotus Notes Domino. Microsoft Has Stunted Innovation

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Tuesday 22 September 2009 10:45 am

Creativity is what spurred the growth of the computer industry and technology. Challenges were met and new frontiers conquered through sharp-edged innovations and competition. Sadly, over the years small companies like Microsoft grew into giants and then lost their thirst for adventure. They deliberately hid their proprietary source code and this stunted innovation. Like a drug peddlers they have created a “Microsoft” addiction among computer users. And, then used the dependency to charge exorbitant prices. Since Microsoft does not believe in promoting open source technology even with intellectual property protection it hampers the faster development of technology and discourages others from even attempting improvements or changes. In blunt terms , Microsoft functions like the Chicago thugs did early this century. It maintains a strangle hold on PC users and sellers and creates strategies that prevent hardware manufacturers from using systems like Netscape. Time and again the company has held other businesses and computer users at ransom with it monopoly on Widows and the Intel platform. In fact a court ruled that Microsoft illegally stunted innovation and did injustice to consumers. The company however always maintains that its practices are just competitive behavior.
In fact a few years ago, the EC found Microsoft guilty of harming the market and consumer by producing less choice and higher prices. For abusing its monopoly Microsoft was fined 497.2 million pounds. Trapped in its early ways of thinking, Microsoft is still to understand and embrace the new world order. The dependency on its old successes, Windows and Office, lingers and any innovations are snuffed out as they germinate if they are perceived as threats to the old monoliths. When examined closely one finds that it is not lack of imagination or effort but the corporate culture and business practices that drag innovation to the ground. However a glimmer of hope emerges from the statement made by Bill Gates, that Microsoft plans to open source both Windows and Office in keeping with present day trends. Also on the net are what are perceived to be “pr stunts” memos by senior Microsoft leaders expressing concern over loss of technological advancements and market leadership and that the company sucks at innovation. Being a monopoly with insatiable hunger for money the company has had a narrow vision over the years. Its dealings have created great mistrust among users as well as business partners. There is no admiration or trust amongst techies and, Microsoft has become its own enemy.
While Skype introduced phone calls over the web, Apple moved with the pace of the cyber world and created downloadable digital content, and Google improvised internet search and developed a new online advertising model. Microsoft stagnated bogged in its own success. And, the truth is that Live Software cannot be termed as innovation, it is a revamp at best. Microsoft needs to take a closer look at itself, shed its inhibitions and shackles to innovate, to lead, to embrace the future.

Microsoft Great Plains: Houston ERP market notes

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Monday 21 September 2009 10:54 pm

In this small article we would like to share our consulting experience, serving Houston business metro ERP/MRP/CRM market, in our case this is Microsoft Great Plains, Microsoft CRM, Microsoft Navision and Microsoft Axapta implementation, customization, integration & reporting. Let’s make introduction on the products.
Microsoft Business Solutions renamed its ERP products: Microsoft Great Plains into Microsoft Dynamics GP, Microsoft CRM into Microsoft Dynamics CRM, Microsoft Navision into Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Microsoft Axapta into Microsoft Dynamics AX and Microsoft Solomon into Microsoft Dynamics SL. Project Green should result in merging product interfaces and making modules cross-integration seamless somewhere in the second decade of XXI century.
To the specifics of Houston market and clientele:• Oil & Gas: Oil Drilling companies and Oil Refineries are relatively large and it is new opportunity for Microsoft Great Plains. In our opinion, when Microsoft SQL Server became a rival to Oracle, DBII and other high-end DB platforms, large enterprises got a very good chance to decrease ERP application implementation & licensing cost and switch from functionally rich ERPs: SAP, Oracle Financials/E-Business Suite/Applications, PeopleSoft, JDEdwards to standard functionality ERPs: Great Plains eEnterprise/Microsoft Great Plains, Navision, etc. Microsoft Dexterity customizations allows you to tune Great Plains to the specific business logic versus paying high price for rich functionality modules• Defense & Aerospace. These enterprises are spread across Texas: San Antonio, Dallas, Austin. These companies, being established and traditional have challenge of cross application integration. In some cases, due to the size of these corporations, Microsoft Dynamics GP serves as ERP for regional branch or subdivision and is subject for consolidation into Corporate ERP. Special consideration should be given to Microsoft CRM and Great Plains integration with Lotus Notes Domino.
• Venture Capital & Startups. Especially in Dallas area. Our experience dealing with such implementations indicates that business processes are so unique, that custom pieces are almost always the must. The business type is generally new services and Service Advantage Suite is usually customized with Microsoft Great Plains Modifier/VBA and Microsoft Dexterity. As Project Green advances, you should expect more .Net side customizations: XML Web Services, eConnect, etc. When we are talking about venture capital – we also include micro cap ventures.
• Chemicals. Across the Gulf of Mexico, up to New Orleans – we have experience implementing, customizing and upgrading Microsoft Dynamics GP for chemical tanks cleaning company.

Microsoft Great Plains: Chicago ERP market overview

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Monday 21 September 2009 9:49 am

In this small article we will review Chicago ERP market: Chicago with suburbs, Northwest Indiana, downstate Illinois and St. Luis. Let us begin with small introduction.
Microsoft Business Solutions has recently renamed its products – new unifying brand name will be Microsoft Dynamics. Project Green should end up in interface unification and probably database merging for all former products (Great Plains, Navision, Axapta, Solomon) – but obviously at this point nobody knows the details. So, we will be dealing with Microsoft Dynamics GP, Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Microsoft Dynamics AX, Microsoft Dynamics SL and Microsoft Dynamics CRM.
Let’s go to the topic and consider the specifics of Chicago Mid-West regional market:• Downtown Chicago businesses: Here we see Financial, Hospitality, Recruiting & Payroll outsourcing, Retail headquarters, Distributors, Non-for-profit, Government (Cook county offices), Exchange & Brokerage. All these businesses and organizations are very good prospects for Microsoft Great Plains, we will talk about implementation challenges below• Chicago Suburbs, St. Luis, Northwest Indiana businesses. This region specializes in distribution: metals, recycling, transportation & logistics, light final assembly & manufacturing. St. Luis region has Oil & Gas facilities: Oil Refineries, Power Plants, etc. Downstate Illinois has manufacturing plants: machinery, chemicals, auto assembly (Rockford area)• Springfield. Government offices plus non-profit organizations: loan processing for farmers, rural communities, agriculture, etc.
• Great Plains ERP. As you should expect, nowadays ERP requires customization and altering to fit unique business needs and considering the specific of Chicagoland you should expect Services, Finance & Distribution modules and custom pieces for Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains: Service Management Suite, integration with Microsoft CRM Sales & Service, Transportation & Logistics custom pieces: settlement report, bill of ladings• Legacy Applications Integration. Chicago area businesses should be considered as traditional and established ones, this is not a California high tech area (however Rockford is trying to attract high tech businesses). You might need Microsoft Access, Unix, Linux, Java/EJB, Oracle, SAP, Siebel, IBM Lotus Notes/Domino, DBII applications integration and heterogeneous reporting• Dexterity Customizations. This is very painful question – we know that many businesses had kind of renaissance time at the end of XX century and this was time when you were sold a lot of Great Plains customizations: Dexterity, VBA/Modifier, ReportWriter, VB, ASP. In order to recover and upgrade these custom pieces you need to find Microsoft Business Solutions Great Plains Partner who has access to Great Plains Source Code (DYNAMICS.DIC with Dexterity scripts)Please do not hesitate to call us: 1-866-528-0577, 1-630-961-5918, help@albaspectrum.com

Microsoft FrontPage Vs Macromedia Dreamweaver

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Sunday 20 September 2009 8:49 pm

After many years of web authorizing, web pages became more complex. Therefore, it is too difficult to program web pages manually using normal word editors because of using so much graphics. As a result, many companies provid their own web editors. The most popular softwares are Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia Dreamweaver. In the web design world, there are two large groups of web designers, one of which prefers Microsoft FrontPage and one of which prefers Macromedia Dreamweaver. In this debate, there are both advantages and disadvantages in using these two softwares.
Microsoft Frontpage:Microsoft FrontPage:The idea of providing a web editor as Microsoft FrontPage is to reduce the difficulties of creating websites. The birthday of this software which is offered by Vermeer Technologies, Inc was in 1994. The software was called “WYSIWYG”, What You See Is What You Get. Then, Microsoft, Corp bought the software rights and changed the name to Microsoft FrontPage in 1995. After that, Microsoft has made several updates of the software: version 1.1, version 2, express 2.0 and so on until Microsoft FrontPage 2003. However, Microsoft this year, 2007 has stopped offering FrontPage and they created two kinds of softwares, Microsoft SharePoint Designer and Microsoft Expression Web.
There are two advantages of using Microsoft FrontPage. One of them that is the interface of Microsoft FrontPage is the same as Microsoft Word. For that reason, people who usually use Microsoft Word can deal with FrontPage’s tools. Moreover, the software is very easy to use. Another benefit of using this software is providing amazing themes with which you can create very useful website. Therefore, there are a lot of web buttons, banners, and images in this software.
On the other hand, there are two disadvantages of using this program. First, the software usually put lots of redundant codes in the web page programming. Your web pages which are created with Microsoft FrontPage could be browsed clearly by Microsoft Internet Explorer, but they couldn’t be browsed well by other web browsers such as Mozilla Firefox. Second, you need a web server in order to run some dynamic activities. Joe, in his article “Macromedia Dreamweaver Vs Microsoft FrontPage” says” Another small hindrance of Frontage is that you need a web server that supports FrontPage extensions to get some features to work.”Macromedia Dreamweaver:Macromedia Dreamweaver is one of the most powerful softwares all over the web authorizing world. Macromedia Corp, which offered Flash and Fireworks softwares, entered the world of web development by providing Macromedia Dreamweaver in 1996. Therefore, Macromedia Corp developed the “WYSIWYG”, What You See Is What You Get, to create the Dreamweaver software. Since Macromedia Dreamweaver became the most important seller of the company, they made a number of updates for this software: Dreamweaver 2.0, Dreamweaver 3.0 until Dreamweaver CS3. In fact, Adobe Corp bought Macromedia Corp in 2006, so they became one company last year.
There are three advantages of using Macromedia Dreamweaver. First, the software supports many kinds of animation such as flash. Furthermore, there are some great flash buttons that are offered with Macromedia Dreamweaver. Second, you can make lots of web templates that you use for a very huge number of web pages. Third, the software supports a large group of programming languages. Therefore, you can create your website by Active Server Pages (ASP), Extensible HyperText Markup Language (XHTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) … etc.
In contrast, there two disadvantages in using this software. One of them is the difficulty of using the software’s tools. According to Joe, in his article “Macromedia Dreamweaver Vs Microsoft FrontPage” using Macromedia Dreamweaver is not easy because of lack of the beginner tools. Therefore, the software’s interface has a lot of complicated tools that deal with a huge number of features. Another disadvantage of using Macromedia Dreamweaver is a little more expensive than Microsoft FrontPage.
Conclusion:In conclusion, the most popular softwares that create web pages are Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia Dreamweaver. Each one has a number of advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of Microsoft FrontPage focus on the easiness of using the program, but disadvantages of that software focus on programming websites. The advantages of Macromedia Dreamweaver focus on how this software is perfect for using the geatest web graphics. In contrast, the disadvantages of that software focus on the difficulty of using the tools and expenses. In my opinion, I prefer to use Microsoft FrontPage since I am familiar with Microsoft Office. Moreover, I have been using Microsoft FrontPage since 2000. As a result, I have a good experience of using this software.
