OCR Software– Optical Character Recognition or Optical Crud Recognition?

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Wednesday 30 September 2009 5:34 pm

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) refers to a software technology and processes that involve the translation of printed text into computer searchable text. Done correctly, OCR enables users to search for and retrieve individual words contained within a file or page. In addition, when a set of files is indexed, users are able to search for keywords across an entire document library and retrieve each page with exact precision. OCR enables users to execute searches in seconds, searches that once could take several hours or days to complete. However, this technology did not work well on older or poor quality documents that contained mixed fonts or combinations of texts and graphics. Until now!! Due to several recent technology advances, it is now possible to obtain six-sigma level character accuracy from these types of document collections.
Although it is important to keep in mind that the quality and condition of the paper documents are still key factors in the successful OCR conversion, dramatically improved results can be obtained by enhancing the quality of the scanned image prior to processing.
Noise removal of borders, speckles and skews are now common on the more advanced document scanners. Furthermore, advanced color filter technologies may be used to reduce any page background colors, in conjunction with multi-light image capture technologies to remove any shadows cast by page creases that could impact image quality or recognition accuracy. Once document scanning and processing are complete, an OCR text layer can actually be added and hidden behind each image. An additional orientation filter can be used to ensure that the best image is presented to the OCR engines. To achieve the highest conversion accuracy possible, the characters in the image can be processed using multi-engine OCR voting technologies that rank each character to determine the best text recognition fit. Then once a word is generated, it will be filtered through a proprietary lexicon to ensure the highest quality results. Finally, this text can be processed utilizing sophisticated layout retention technologies to represent the image text layout, to provide the best possible text representation for precise search and retrieval. After all, isn’t that why they call it Optical Character Recognition?

New to gaming, all you need to know about Flash gaming sites

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Tuesday 29 September 2009 12:45 pm

Whew! According to Computer Gaming World, there are 80 gazillion free Flash games sites in the cyber world. Popular sites are:• www.games.yahoo.com — this has card games, word games, arcade games, as well as puzzles. The number of violent games is limited so the site appeals to the “old-young” –those who are young at heart.
• www.shockwave.com — a popular site with original games as well as PopCap ones. One can do a jigsaw here everyday. • www.addictinggames.com – has free games that are updated every week—Friday. The site has action, arcade, puzzle, as well as sports games.
• www.arcadetown.com — has Flash games, java games, downloads and more.
Since Flash offers many advantages to developers as well as players, many games are designed using Macromedia Flash. It is by far the best game platform and has incredible features. In an industry that’s evincing exponential growth, Flash has become the universal and popular choice for multimedia intensive web sites. Flash, singly crosses most barriers—• It supports complicated and wonderful graphics.
• Allows download of files via the Internet.
• And is compatible with playback devices.
In the world of Flash enabled games the hosting system is the web server itself. Flash enables web sites to host animated as well as interactive movies and games. There is no paraphernalia required. All that is needed is to download the game itself. The costs are minimal and not recurring. To play on the web all that is required is: a web browser, a Flash player, and the Internet. Flash is the universal plug in needed to play games. It is installed on every PC with Windows XP and Mac. Playing online can be fun and most games can now be played by many players from all round the world. Just keep in mind:• That there are players who cheat at games. Look for PunkBuster software on the server, this detects cheats who try and gain unfair advantages.
• Play with others who have credibility and are accountable for their actions. Many online sites need verified log ins, they are actively managed gaming environments. This is a better choice for safe gaming.
• Create a select group of friends and use the broadband server to host a private gaming server.
• Do your research thoroughly. Seek safe and high quality gaming sites. Gaming is in its golden phase and is set to reach new heights. Innovation, new business models, and unprecedented growth is expected to open new avenues in gaming.

New Spyware Threat Costs People Big Money

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Tuesday 29 September 2009 6:13 am

Lincoln, NE – April 13, 2006:A new Spyware infection was discovered this morning by the Schrock Innovations research department called MoviePass. Internet users intentionally or unintentionally install the MoviePass software on their computers while attempting to download music or movies from the Internet. Once the free trial software expires, MoviePass demands $29.99 a month from unsuspecting victims. Those who refuse to pay can be slapped with a $359.88 bill and a damaged credit report. According to Thor Schrock, owner of Schrock Innovations, the MoviePass software blurs the line somewhat between a legitimate software subscription service and a dangerous spyware threat. The software seems to provide a legitimate service, but also collects information about all of the programs on your computer to prevent “software conflicts.” This same information could be used to detect anti-spyware programs and build counter measures into the MoviePass software. Additionally, when consumers sign up for the MoviePass free trial, they are required to agree to a lengthy Terms of use agreement. Within that agreement there is language that explains how customers of MoviePass will be automatically billed if they fail to remove the MoviePass software from their computer before the expiration of their trial. An excerpt from the Terms of use reads, “IF YOU DO NOT EITHER CANCEL OR PROVIDE PAYMENT INFORMATION DURING THE TRIAL PERIOD OUR BILLING SOFTWARE WILL BE ENABLED UPON THE EXPIRATION OF YOUR TRIAL PERIOD. THE BILLING SOFTWARE WILL RUN ON YOUR COMPUTER, DISPLAYING POP-UP WINDOW REMINDERS THAT PROVIDE YOU WITH VARIOUS METHODS OF PAYMENT FOR THE ANNUAL LICENSE. THESE POP-UP WINDOWS WILL APPEAR MORE FREQUENTLY UNTIL YOU CHOOSE ONE OF THE PAYMENT OPTIONS AND PAY FOR THE LICENSE.”The agreement continues by specifying “IF YOU FAIL TO PAY OR CANCEL DURING THE TRIAL PERIOD, YOU ARE LEGALLY OBLIGATED TO PURCHASE AN ANNUAL LICENSE TO THE MEDIAPIPE SOFTWARE AT THE PRICE LISTED IN THE ADVERTISEMENT YOU CLICKED THROUGH TO INITIATE INSTALLATION.” “Consumers who install this software on their computers agree to a Terms of Use agreement in order to establish their free trial,” Schrock said.” Once they have agreed to that document, an account is established in their name that has to be cancelled via telephone in accordance with that agreement, or it will end up costing them big money.” In the Terms of use available on the company’s website at www.mediapass.tv, the company also explains that is has the right to use your hard drive and bandwidth for their purposes, as well as share your personal information with their affiliates. Schrock said a telltale sign of the presence of this software is when your computer starts displaying MoviePass messages asking you for billing information. Schrock recommends that unless you wish to continue subscribing to the MoviePass service, you immediately call MoviePass and cancel your account before you remove the software “The sad thing is that the way the Terms of Use agreement reads, once your trial expires you must immediately provide your billing information to MoviePass, otherwise they will invoice you for an entire year’s worth of service,” Schrock said. “It is also critical that you call MoviePass to cancel before you remove the software from your computer. MoviePass is unable to cancel your account unless you provide a number from within your software.” The MoviePass and MediaPipe software do have uninstallers that are provided by the company and located in the Add/Remove Programs folder. While the uninstallers remove a great deal of the software, they do not remove everything so a manual cleanup is required of up to 5 folders in the Program Files folder on your computer’s hard drive. More information about MoviePass, including their Terms of Use and subscription rates can be located at http://www.moviepass.tv. Consumers who wish to unsubscribe from the service must call MoviePass at (866) 431-7720.

NEW FRONTIERS OF REMOTE ACCESS – COMPUTER NETWORK HELPING HAND

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Monday 28 September 2009 10:15 pm

How many times a day does an admin wish he had an opportunity to watch a live color image of what is going on at any network computer in real time? An adminstrator of a corporate network certainly has his hands full. Giving a helping hand to the employee who is having a failure at any given moment is probably one of the most important demands of being an admin, and the most time consuming. So anything that makes the job of remote troubleshooting easier and more effective will probably be welcomed. One technological enhancement that fits that bill is a new software system called Anyplace Control (http://www.anyplace-control.com). Developed by Anyplace Control Software Inc., the program allows a network adminstrator to monitor and control any remote PC in a network giving remote access computer with no need to stand up and walk to the physical location of the specific PC.
The system consists of Admin and Host modules that should be installed on the local computer and a remote one. The product requires both computers to be hooked to each other via the Internet or a LAN. The connection between these PCs can be established in two ways, either via an IP address or a DNS name or over the Internet using an account name and a nickname. In the latter case, the account type of connection allows bypassing routers and firewalls automatically granting remote access computer. Moreover it isn’t necessary to open any ports on the firewall that allows to keep a considerable security level. So there is no need neither for users nor for system administrators to tweak network tuning at all which makes the program an easy to implement one.
After installing the program, administrator just goes about his everyday activities without doing anything special. At any moment, he can start Anyplace Control to get an easy remote access computer in a network, and if there is a need to help a remote user, takes control over remote computer, with his mouse and keyboard as if he were sitting in front of it. admins can move the necessary files between PCs, install new software, restart and shut down remote workstations and do anything else that one would normally do at the local workstationcomputer.
SPHERES OF PRODUCT APPLICATIONAnyplace Control is a reasonable alternative to Virtual Private Networks (VPN). Corporate computer networks which are located in the same or different countries can be consolidated into a single common network. Company employees can have full remote access to the necessary PCs of the other branch through the secure communication channel provided by Anyplace Control.
A special helpdesk edition of Anyplace Control enables help-desk specialists to provide remote tech support via the Internet or LAN to the customers who cannot resolve technical issues on their own. A technician can have easy remote access to the customer’s desktop and fix any issue on the remote machine rapidly (reducing the general cost of the help-desk services to the end user).
Corporate networks aren’t the only sphere of product use. White collars may find Anyplace Control useful while going to the business trips and taking part in presentations. Such unpleasant situations as missing PowerPoint presentations happen not so rarely as one may think. But issues of such nature are far less annoying when using Anyplace Control. Keeping the laptop open, click on the Anyplace Control icon and get full remote access to the home or office PC established over the Internet. Remote desktop displays the data as you left it, so it is pretty easy to browse to the folder where the presentation is saved, copy the missing file to the laptop using the file transfer option in Anyplace Control or simply start the presentation on remote desktop and let the others watch it on the laptop screen.
Using Anyplace Control, an individual can help relatives and friends to resolve computer issues without leaving the comfort of home chair. The product is also a tool for sharing files with friends. Transferring music, photos or documents directly to the friend’s computer is easy with Anyplace Control.
With Anyplace Control each user, either a home or a corporate one, can find the product meeting to only one’s requirements but budget as well.

My Big Lesson – Adware Protection

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Monday 28 September 2009 8:33 am

Working in an office all day, connected to an open network I need to be very protective of my computer. I don’t look at those sites I shouldn’t be looking at, I don’t download music, and I have an adware and virus protection plan I stick to religiously. Each Monday upon startup, while I’m downloading my weekend mail and listening to the weekend dramas of my collegues I update my virus definitions and proceed to scan every inch of my computer for invading viruses. If I’ve made it through the working week I deserve a treat, so I drag my best friend out of her office and off we go to this quaint sushi bar down the street. Fire, dancing and fantastic sushi made in front of my eyes is just enough to make me forget the work piling up back at the office. Anyway by the time I pulled myself out of sushi mode, up the stairs, and back to the office my weekly spyware scan was complete, and was congratulating me on having a “spyware and adware free computer.” Working on the net all day every day, competent adware protection software is important. I’m always skeptical when collegues offer me a new, free adware software. So for the last 2 months I’ve been using not just one adware protection program, but the 2 best anti-adware software packages I could find…….. everything was going great until……….
It was Friday morning, just one more day till the weekend, the boss couldn’t keep quiet about this weekends’ date, blonde, funny, the complete package…………..
Anyway, I was listening with amusement to the excited rantings while my inbox filled with this mornings messages, and suddenly everything went blue……. Not just my screen, but everyone on the network……….. Everything was down, no work today………………Monday morning came around and the boss wasn’t happy, he missed his date trying to sort out the network, no date and no second chance…….. I was in the bad books, turns out one of the “Adware Protection” software programs I had downloaded had secretly filled mine, and every computer on the network with spyware….. Not Good At All! A weekend without sales, without a date, and more than enough stress, all because of my one mistake…….. Needless to say I am no longer in charge of spyware and adware protection at the office. The techies who had to spend the weekend fixing my mistake have now installed a new adware program on my computer, one program to take care of the lot, I don’t touch it, I don’t change any settings, and I’m happy with that….. Finally the boss has calmed down and everything’s under control again, luckily I’ve got a great boss that can see the funny side of things ……. and I still have a job! A lesson learned is the way I’m looking at the whole situation. My advice to anyone working online is be aware of what you are downloading to your computer, sometimes software that should be protecting is actually infecting! You can find the Adware Protecter we now use at http://www.realtimesolutions.info

Music Editors To End MP3 Player War

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Sunday 27 September 2009 9:47 pm

Creative Technology made its debut in the global PC community with the powerful Sound Blaster cards, and we all knew how Apple notebooks changed the way the world looked at laptops and computer accessories. It was a decade ago, and no one has heard much of them ever since.
Now, they are coming back, in full force, in what is seen as an explosive MP3 player war that started brewing the very moment Apple released its first iPod products that yet again changed the way teenagers had listened to music.
CNet reviews, as well as most other industry papers, consistently rank Creative and Apple undisputed leaders in the industry. Both produce cutting-edge MP3 players that go beyond even stringent standards of the avid music lover. Player capacity keeps breaking limits, from the mere 256 Megabytes three years ago to the current huge 60 Gigabytes. Furthermore, there are also added features of photo viewer and video screening that define the modern MP3 experience.
The war seems to promise a long-standing stalemate as both titans flex their technologies to outperform the other.
As I see it right now, perhaps Creative and Apple are misusing their precious microchips on hip-but-not-exactly-necessary attributes, photo and video viewer and personal organizer for instance (fortunately they have not released camera Zens or iPods), and essentially missing out on the definitive feature of MP3 players that could determine the number 1 leader between them.
I’m talking about MP3 music, and music editors.
Imagine the scenario in which you owned an MP3 player that not only excellently playbacks but also edits your music, molding it to your will. Imagine how your MP3 player could not only record your voice but compare it to your favorite artistes’ vocal qualities as well. That, I say, would truly be the defining music experience by not only an MP3 player, but an MP3 player morpher, one that plays and personalizes your music collection.
Unfortunately, we could only imagine right now, as neither Creative nor Apple seems to shift the direction of this MP3 war, from feature-loaded to feature-focused. MP3 player users still have to endure a long wait before both factions realize the unending nature of the war.
However, when there’s a will, there’s a way. Though there’s yet to be any MP3 player that could morph music in the market, PC users could savor the luxury of music editor software that not only morphs songs the way they like it but is also loaded with features such as voice comparator and multi-track editing panels that help mix music professionally. In addition, software products the like of Audio4Fun Music Morpher Gold further offer built-in special audio effects to be applied to users’ collection of songs.
I wonder when Creative and Apple could develop this kind of genuine music software to be added to their MP3 players to make music truly creative.

MSN Messenger 7.5 Received Editor’s Choice Award On Download3000.com

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Sunday 27 September 2009 5:31 am

I have always been a fan of MSN Messenger versus other instant messaging programs. Version 7.5 packs all the best and available features into a small easy download.
Unlike Yahoo! Messenger you can choose to install additional items such as the popup blocker or toolbar. Yahoo! Messenger forces some of these options on to you without giving you a choice. When you instant message somebody or have them instant message you, you have all of the available features right in the instant message window such as video, voice, pictures, games, and various other features. You can easily send and receive files just by dragging and dropping them into the window. You can even have multiple people in the conversation, this feature could be good for businesses who need to have a meeting with people from around the world.
Features also include direct linking to your hotmail or MSN e-mail accounts. When you are bored and have nothing better to do MSN Messenger offers great games that you can play with your buddies just within the instant message window! Games vary from checkers to chess to just about anything you can imagine. You can talk to your buddies for free if you have a microphone using the voice command which has great audio quality. Want to have a video chat? That’s just as easy as the voice chat using your webcam. You can even combine both and use the voice chat and the webcam chat so you can see and hear your buddy at the same time. With different activities at your disposal you can use the whiteboard to draw up sketches for your business or just to have fun.
The main problem with MSN messenger today is that it is mainly used for the adult age. The teenagers are mostly stuck in the AIM era which is also developing. Overall I think the folks down at MSN did a great job on MSN messenger 7.5.
I would recommend it to anyone who needed to just keep in touch with family members to small businesses who need to keep in contact with all of their employees. MSN messenger is free for everyone. The only thing you have to do is sign up for a free hotmail account.
ProsThe features, you have got to love all the features that MSN Messenger supports.
ConsNot everything is free. Some of the additional emoticons or winks cost money.
All in allThis is a great program I love to use it to talk to my friends or co-workers.

MSDS Availability for Chemical Manufacturers

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Saturday 26 September 2009 12:04 pm

Material Safety Data Sheets are an important part of the chemical manufacturing business, not only from a safety standpoint, but from a regulatory standpoint as well. Chemical manufacturers must make Material Safety Data Sheets available for all clients and products when applicable. In order to provide the proper documentation and labeling, chemical manufacturers must rely on MSDS generating software. In addition to Material Safety Data Sheets, there are several other documentation protocols which must be considered. These are usually covered by most MSDS generating software applications, although not always. Most MSDS generating software is sold as part of a wider process manufacturing software application. Process manufacturing software is a necessary component of any process-based manufacturing operation such as food production, paint and stain production and of course, chemical production. The primary function of MSDS generating software is to determine and provide accurate labels for chemicals and chemical compounds that meet the safety requirements of those purchasing the chemicals and the regulatory requirements of the various pertinent regulatory agencies and Federal acts that are placed under the jurisdiction of the Environmental Protection Agency. Agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and acts such as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation & Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA), the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) and the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) provide just a portion of the regulatory labeling protocols that must be met. The importance of proper MSDS and other necessary documentation should not be overlooked by anyone in the chemical manufacturing, processing or distribution business. Making this type of data available is not only a safety responsibility; it is also a federal requirement. Keeping current with regulatory guidelines by utilizing the proper MSDS generating software is an excellent way to maintain compliance for businesses involved in the chemical manufacturing industry.

MPEG encoder for burning DVDs

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Friday 25 September 2009 8:52 pm

MPEG, or Moving Picture Experts Group, is a jointly working group comprised of the International Standards Organization and International Electro-Technical Commission (ISO/IEC) to standardize the coding of moving pictures and the associated audio in a digital compressed format.
MPEG-2 uses very sophisticated compression techniques to compress audio and video in order for it to be burned on a DVD. You can purchase and download hardware and software MPEG Encoders to burn a DVD. MPEG-2 is the process needed to encode video and audio information for a DVD burner, by burning the information onto a DVD disc with time stamps. The process of an MPEG encoder for burning DVDs is done using codec’s to encode the video and audio and save it in smaller pieces to be transformed into a frequency space and then quantized.
MPEG-3 is one of the discontinued encoding processes for digital media, and is often confused for MPEG-1 (what we know as MP3). MP3 encoding has quickly become the standard for digitizing music around the world, and listening to it on your computer, laptop or personal MP3 Player. Most people burn mp3 songs to CDROMS, however for digital archiving, some people burn the files to DVD as well.
To burn a DVD, you need a DVD burner, an MPEG Encoder, a blank DVD-R (recordable) disc and the audio and video that you wish to burn onto the DVD-R. MPEG Encoders can be bought as hardware or software and downloaded to transform and compress your audio and video file into MPEG format so that it can be burned onto a DVD using a DVD Burner. The process itself is quite complex and took a team of specialists to perfect. However, the process is streamlined where you as the end user are only expected to follow short, simple commands by the software to burn your encoded data.
You can search the internet for a suitable MPEG encoder and also for a DVD burner that will best suit your needs. Your local computer shopping store will also have a variety of DVD burners with some expert advice on which products will best work for what information you are looking to encode and burn.
And lastly, when in doubt about which MPEG compression algorithm to use to encode your data, “google” it. Chances are that you are not the only person who has had a question regarding MPEG encoding and DVD Burning. By doing your research early, you can ensure your next burn will go smoothly!
