Build a Knowledge Portfolio…increase your chances of getting a job!

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Monday 25 May 2009 4:38 pm

Remain Competitive in Today’s IT Market…Build a Knowledge Portfolio!

Times have changed. The competition here and abroad for jobs is tough, to put it mildly. As a programmer you are going to have to work hard to stay in the rat race – to stay relevant…but how?

Take the initiative for your career – for your future

Your greatest assets are your knowledge, experiences, and the ability to apply these to developing solutions.

Dave Thomas, author of “The Pragmatic Programmer, states in a talk “How to Keep Your Job”, that you must “invest in yourself”. He suggests that we treat our knowledge assets as if they were a financial portfolio. By investing in – and managing – your “Knowledge Portfolio”, you ensure that your knowledge assets maintain or increase their overall value and endure changes in the industry, hence remaining more marketable.

The Keys to a Successful Knowledge Portfolio

1. Plan…Set a Goal and Stay the Course…
“Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan.”– Tom Landry

A successful Knowledge Portfolio starts with a plan. Would you build a house, plan for retirement, or put aside a nest egg for your child’s college tuition without having an appropriate plan adapted to reaching that particular goal? No! Why should your career be any different?

Your Knowledge Portfolio should consist of the never-ending learning process I mentioned above. Do not assume that the knowledge base you have today will be valuable five years from now. Plan for now and for the future by setting specific goals for this year, next year, and five years from now and allow room for change.

Get a sense of where the industry is heading…Decide on where you want to be…Read books,magazines, blogs, newsgroups, and mailing lists…Join community sites…Talk to people.

2. Invest
“If a man empties his purse into his head, no man can take it away from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.”– Benjamin Franklin

It is vital to take the time necessary to build your Knowledge Portfolio. “Time” should never be an issue. I’m not suggesting hours per day…but rather hours per week or per month. Building your Knowledge Portfolio should become habit and not just something you do when you “have time”. It needs to be part of your life, a ritual.

Pursue Knowledge. Pursue Education. Take classes at training centers or colleges.
Learn tools, techniques, and frameworks to improve productivity or the quality of your code. Take time to understand a specific industry outside of IT – i.e. healthcare, finance, etc. You will always obtain some form of return on this investment.

3. Diversify
Planning and investing only gets you part of the way to a successful collection of knowledge assets. Spread out your investments in different areas. Strike a balance between low-risk and high-risk investments. Choose your investments to maximize the value of your portfolio. Good investments will minimize risk while not preventing opportunities. The more you know, the more valuable you are.

As a programmer, I try not to focus solely on just my favorite technologies, languages or environments. I’ve learned to branch out to different flavors. However, this took time.

The most value will come from learning something that is greatly different from the familiar. For example; if you know C#, learn Ruby. If your operating system of choice is Windows learn Unix.Know Visual Studio? Learn Emacs. If you create Desktop Applications try developing for Mobile Devices. The list is never ending.

4. Review
Your knowledge portfolio does not live in a vacuum. As the industry and you change, your portfolio’s value and plan will require re-evaluation for their relevance. It is imperative to keep an eye on your portfolio. Make it a habit to check it regularly.

Evaluate your assets for their perceived value in the current marketplace. What is their expected value? Is your plan still sound or do you need to change it?

You DO have control over your own destiny…

To be successful in the current IT environment it will take conscious, directed effort on your part. One of the few key areas you have control over is your own value – the value of your Knowledge Portfolio. By taking the initiative and following the suggestions outlined above, you will not only remain competitive, but will also likely find that good opportunities are still out there for the taking.

In closing, I have been a full-time Instructor at SetFocus since 2000. One of the best parts of my job is watching people make an investment in themselves and see return on that investment. Every year roughly 125 men and women join SetFocus’ .NET Master’s Program in an effort to build or rebuild their Knowledge Portfolios. Through the help and willingness of the instructors, career services, and the students themselves, each person walks away from the Master’s Program with a stronger and more marketable Knowledge Portfolio than when they joined and the results speak for themselves. In 2003, 90% of our .NET Master’s Program students attained a programming position within 13 weeks following the training…enough said.

“Success in business requires training and discipline and hard work. But if you’re not frightened by these things, the opportunities are just as great today as they ever were.”– David Rockefeller

Boost Windows XP Performance with Flash Memory

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Monday 25 May 2009 2:50 am

Have you read about Microsoft ReadyBoost technology in the press, but are disappointed it didn’t make its way into Windows XP? Are you reluctant to upgrade your PC or operating system, but wish for the increased responsiveness and performance benefits provided by ReadyBoost? Get eBoostr (http://www.eboostr.com/) and give your Windows XP the same performance benefits as provided by Microsoft ReadyBoost, only without its limitations!
 ReadyBoost is one of the core technologies implemented by Microsoft in Windows Vista. The new technology solves a bottleneck typical for many PCs when upgrading to a new Microsoft operating system: the lack of memory. It is no secret that every new operating system released by Microsoft is more memory-hungry than the one it replaces. With ReadyBoost technology built into its latest generation of operating systems, Windows Vista, Microsoft attempted to address this problem. This time they did it by allowing using cheap flash memory such as USB memory sticks or memory cards typically found in digital cameras to expand the amount of memory available to the system, reducing hard drive access and improving overall system performance and application responsiveness.
 ReadyBoost is a great technology when you’re low on RAM. The problem is that ReadyBoost is only available in Windows Vista and it never made it to its older sibling, Windows XP. Computers using Windows XP are older than those sold with pre-installed Windows Vista. In general, they have less memory installed, and would benefit from using ReadyBoost even more than the modern machines. Alas, ReadyBoost will not be available unless you pull the trigger and upgrade to Windows Vista.
Is there a real necessity to call for such drastic measures to get a performance boost? No! MDO Ltd. has released a replacement for Microsoft ReadyBoost technology - only this time it works on Windows XP machines!
eBoostr (http://www.eboostr.com/) does everything that Microsoft ReadyBoost can do. It replaces relatively slow access to hard disk by fast one to flash memory, allowing you to use up to four different flash devices, and provides the same benefits of increased system performance, improved application load times and better overall responsiveness.
eBoostr is even more useful than ReadyBoost as it does not place strict performance requirements on the flash memory you use to speed up your system. While ReadyBoost requires you to use faster and more costly memory cards, eBoostr can work with just about every inexpensive flash drive on the market. Unlike ReadyBoost, eBoostr supports up to four flash devices at the same time, a real breath of fresh air after ReadyBoost which supports just one. Finally, eBoostr enhances the performance of slower PCs as well as computers with lots of RAM, while ReadyBoost mostly benefits slower PCs with a limited amount of memory.
Do you have a laptop computer with a built-in card reader or a free USB port? Plug a memory card or a flash drive into your laptop and enjoy increased system performance and longer battery life! It’s no secret that mobile hard drives used in notebook computers are much slower than their desktop counterparts. eBoostr reduces the amount of hard drive activity, which results in even greater performance benefits than on the bigger desktops, while at the same time reducing the amount of energy required to drive the laptop, allowing your notebook to survive longer on a single battery charge.
Grab the nearest flash card, install eBoostr (http://www.eboostr.com/) and start enjoying increased system performance and application responsiveness immediately!

Bookmark Managers: Programs vs. Web Services

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Sunday 24 May 2009 8:30 pm

The rapid development of the World Wide Web in recent years has led to an explosive growth of information on the Internet. Our contemporary lifestyle would be unimaginable without access to such a super-abundant cornucopia of valuable information and web surfing has now become an everyday occupation for even the most diverse sections of society.
This rapid expansion of web resources raises some new issues for all of us. How could you possibly remember; after a long search, the address of that crucial web page? How will you be able to return to the page without repeating a tedious web search through hundreds and thousands of pages? The answer is obvious, you need a program that will allow you to easily create and manage a database of web resources. Of course, this database must be quick, intuitive and convenient to use. One way to resolve this problem is to use your web browser’s bookmarks feature. Bookmarks are a popular term for the lists of web page links stored in web browsers, although they are called ‘Favorites’ in Internet Explorer. These web browser bookmark systems have some severe limitations. For example, each bookmark list will only be compatible with a specific web browser. If you use several different web browsers you will have to manage the bookmark system in each one. Web browser bookmark lists may become cumbersome to use when your bookmark list grows beyond a few items. Important features missing from web browser bookmark systems include:
- Powerful search functions;

- Synchronization of bookmarks between different computers;

- Detection and automatic deletion of duplicate bookmarks;

- Checks for availability of bookmarked web pages.
Specialist programs and web services that store and organize bookmarks are now available and they offer a comprehensive solution to these problems. They are called bookmark managers or bookmark organizers (in this article both terms have the same meaning). The difference between online (web-based) bookmark managers and standalone bookmark managers is in the location of the stored bookmark database and in the way that the database is accessed. Web services called ‘online bookmark managers’ store the user’s bookmarks on their remote servers and their bookmarks may be accessed from any browser. A standalone bookmark organizer is simply a program which runs on your local computer. It stores the bookmark database on a hard disk and allows access through its own built-in interface.
Here are some examples of web-based bookmark managers:iKeepBookmarks.com - http://www.ikeepbookmarks.comLinkaGoGo - http://www.linkagogo.comMurl - http://murl.comYou can find more links to online bookmark managers here: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/On_the_Web/Web_Applications/Bookmark_Managers/Bookmark management software can be found here:Link Commander - http://www.resortlabs.com/bookmark-manager/linkcommander.phpLinkman - http://www.outertech.com/index.php?_charisma_page=product&id=5Powermarks - http://www.kaylon.com/power.htmlAny software catalog will contain plenty of links to bookmark managers. For example: http://www.snapfiles.com/shareware/misctools/swurlorg.htmlOffline and online bookmark managers each have relative advantages and disadvantages due to their differing methods of database storage and access.
An online bookmark manager does not depend on any particular computer. If you have an Internet connection you can access your bookmarks from any computer in the world. You don’t need to synchronize the bookmarks on your home/work PC or notebook because they will all access the same bookmarks database. With an online bookmark manager you can access your bookmarks even when you are in an Internet cafe! Another advantage is that most of them are free. They will cost you time, though, because you access your bookmarks via an Internet connection. More importantly, most of the web interfaces are not as convenient as software based bookmark managers and don’t have so many useful features. For example, they can’t search for and delete duplicate database items. Here are some of the other potential disadvantages of using online bookmark managers:
1) You risk losing all your bookmarks if, for some reason, the web service closes down.

2) There is a danger of unauthorized access to your private bookmarks because your bookmark manager server may not be secure against hackers. The advantages and disadvantages of offline bookmark managers are almost exactly opposite to those of online bookmark managers and will be discussed next.
Any offline bookmark manager is tied to the computer on which it is installed. It stores your bookmarks in a database (which usually has its own proprietary format) that is located on one of the hard drives. To use your bookmarks on several computers you will need to install the program on each computer and find a way to synchronize the bookmark databases. Most of the currently available bookmark organizers do have a database synchronization feature. Also, there are now devices with high data transfer speeds (e.g. flash drives) that can store an independent bookmark database and allow it to be shared between several computers.
Another disadvantage of bookmark manager software is the price. There are some free programs out there, but they don’t have a great number of features and technical support is often weak or unavailable. The programs that require payment are inexpensive, though, usually costing from $20 to $40. The user licenses of such programs will normally allow you to install the programs on all of your computers.
In my opinion, the disadvantages of standalone bookmark managers are minimal compared to their advantages. The location of both the program and database on the same computer guarantees you fast access to your bookmarks and high security from hacker attacks. The convenience of the program interface and the number of useful features are limited only by the power of the computer and the skills of developers.
So, how should you organize your bookmarks? Should you use an online or offline bookmark manager? I don’t think there is a definite answer. It all depends on your preferences and working habits. If mobility is your priority, if you travel often and wish to access your bookmarks no matter where you are and from any computer, then you should consider an online bookmark manager. If speed, ease of use, security and functionality is most important to you then an offline bookmark manager might be a better choice.

Block websites on your computer

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Sunday 24 May 2009 11:17 am

Broadband Internet connectivity is so common these days that almost no one has a second thought about connecting to the Internet. Connecting is easy, but what if you need to control or restrict the ways in which the Internet connection is to be used? Sure enough, widespread availability of unlimited, unmetered Internet connections has its pros. But what about the contras?
Everybody is talking about nowadays how fast their connection is. Fast and unlimited maybe fine for the most home users, but this is not necessarily the same for work or study environments, public places, or specific age groups. The Internet contains enough threats such as spyware and viruses to make you wish to restrict access to certain resources. A virus can corrupt or destroy information on your PC, causing you spending days to recover data. Spyware steals your personal information and slows down your computer’s performance, making it a pain to work on. While it is usually possible to fix a PC contaminated with spyware and viruses, it is much safer and easier to prevent the infection in the first place – by restricting the browsing to the list of known, safe Web sites.
Restrict Internet browsing in Internet Explorer to the defined list of safe Web sites with Ashkon Software WebAllow http://www.weballow.com! WebAllow prevents electronic infections by block access to all but selected preapproved Web sites in Internet Explorer, effectively protecting your computer from spyware and viruses. If a user on your computer tries to access a website that is not on the list of allowed sites, she is redirected to a Web page of your choice to inform her about your access restriction policy.
While viruses and spyware sound familiar enough, Internet threats are not limited to those. The Internet offers a great variety of resources that are not always appropriate for your audience. Online computer games may be fine for the kids, but they can occupy the employees’ attention in an office. Online chats, forums and blogs are popular among students and office employees, occupying their time and taking away from their study or work – wasting valuable time. Finally, while certain Web sites may be appropriate for adults, these same sites are not likely to make you smile when accessed by your children due to coarse language or adult content.
Use WebAllow at home to block all but kid-safe Web sites on your home PC. Use it in the office to prevent your employees wasting their time playing computer games, chatting on the forums or reading breakdown news. Use the same product in the school, college or university to concentrate students’ attention on their study by only allowing access to their online class materials. Install WebAllow in a store or in a library and allow your customers to access your book or product catalog and nothing else. Do not let your computer users misuse Internet connection with WebAllow!
When installed, WebAllow is easy to configure by the administrator, and impossible to disable or uninstall by the regular users. It embeds into Internet Explorer and makes it impossible to visit Web sites other than defined. WebAllow is light on memory and disk space, and is perfect to be used on any computer type from powerful workstations to public computers with small memory and hard drives.
Once configured, WebAllow requires absolutely zero administration and runs completely unattended. WebAllow will improve your personal privacy and computer security, protect your kids, increase employee performance and motivate students. Download evaluation copy for free at http://www.weballow.com/

Biometric keyboard signature authentication for Windows logon - A Short Guide to DiBiSoft-s BioKeyLogon.

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Saturday 23 May 2009 6:56 pm

Hello! We are glad you’ve come.
Application of biometric methods allows you to significantly increase the security of your confidential information. Knowing the passphrase will not suffice for the intruder anymore, as he will need to possess the unique physical parameters of the legal owner of the protected data.
The market of biometric authentication means already exists. As a rule, they are represented by expensive hardware/software solutions used for access control in large commercial or public institutions, where the overall cost of information is much higher than the cost of biometric systems themselves. For the majority of companies, firms, small offices, home and mobile computers, where the level of data confidentiality is relatively low, the use of highly expensive biometric systems is not financially justified.
The passphrase analysis method is one of the existing authentication methods. As a rule, it complements the standard password authentication method. In such methods, the user must know the passphrase and should be able to correctly type it using the keyboard. That is how the standard passphrase authentication procedure is extended by biometric keyboard signature authentication.
However, the cost of such a solution will be significantly lower that the cost of biometric systems with a comparable level of authentication errors. For instance, the cost of a biometric system that uses iris scanning lies in the ballpark of 500 dollars, whereas retina scanning systems are priced around 4000 dollars, the cost of the scanner accounting for the largest fraction of the overall cost.
BioKeyLogon is a new original solution in the field of biometric authentication. BioKeyLogon enables you to extend the standard OS login procedure by using a discreet biometric authentication procedure based on keyboard signature. This application works with Windows 2000/2003/XP and is intended for home, small office and corporate use.
The developers of BioKeyLogon solved the following problems:
- The influence of the psychophysical condition of the user has been minimized;

- The process of creating the user’s biometric model has been simplified (usually the user had to enter the password at least 20 times);

- The system’s ability to analyze the indistinct keyboard signature of an “average” user has been improved;

- The system now monitors the dynamics of the user’s keyboard behavior and makes appropriate dynamic changes to the user’s biometric model.
BioKeyLogon fully integrates into the system and stays hidden. Users log into the system the same way they did before, but the software discreetly checks the dynamics of password entry. If this parameter is different from the reference value, the system will react as if an incorrect answer has been entered. If the intruder knows the password only and tries to log into a system protected by BioKeyLogon, the chances of his success will be minimal. The situation will also appear confusing, as the system will report a wrong password notification message for the password that the intruder will deem fully valid.
The procedure of discreet biometric authentication based on keyboard signature is used only for those users that keep a reference keyboard signature stored in their system. Other users will use the standard password-protected login. All biometric data of the system users are stored in an additional secure location.
You can read more about BioKeyLogon from our product page: http://www.allmysoft.com/download-biokeylogon-software.html You can take a look and download the program that best suites your needs from our website:http://www.allmysoft.comHave a nice day!

Beware Of Spyware — Steps To Take To Protect Your Computer

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Saturday 23 May 2009 3:07 am

Spyware refers to malicious software that takes partial control of a computer’s operation through unauthorized access without the computers owners’ knowledge or consent, and has become one of the biggest security threats to computer users today.
Spyware exploits infected computers for commercial gain, usually by including unsolicited pop-up advertisements; by monitoring the users’ online activities; by routing http requests to advertising sites; or by stealing personal information such as financial information. In fact, it is estimated that identity-thieves have stolen over US$ 24 billion worth of account information in the United States alone.
Spyware most often infects a computer by piggybacking on a desirable software and the user unknowingly downloading and installing it. Spyware also often lurks in rogue anti-spyware programs that pretend to be security software. Spyware also comes bundled with shareware or other downloadable software and music CDs.
Yet another method of distributing spyware involves tricking computer users by manipulating security features designed to prevent unwanted installations. For example, surfers using the Internet Explorer web browser may unwittingly click on a command prompt that appears to be a Windows dialog box, when in actual fact it initiates the spyware download.
With the spyware threat worsening, several anti-spyware programs have emerged that are designed to counteract or remove spyware. Programs such as Ad-Aware SE and Spybot - Search & Destroy are some of the more popular and effective tools to remove and intercept spyware programs. Microsoft has also released Windows AntiSpyware to combat the spyware problem. Other popular anti-spyware programs include Spy Sweeper, Spyware Doctor, XoftSpy, and CounterSpy.
Anti-virus firms Symantec, McAfee and Sophos, while reluctant initially to add anti-spyware features to their anti-virus products, have finally added anti-spyware features to the recent versions of their anti-virus products.
Computer users have also become savvier in detecting spyware. Many users now install a web browser other than Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE), such as Opera or Mozilla Firefox which are not as vulnerable as IE is to spyware - though that is not to say that Opera and Firefox have not suffered from similar security vulnerabilities. No one single browser is 100% safe, as “security” all depends on the person using the browser.
Some internet service providers, especially colleges and universities, block spyware by using their network firewalls and web proxies to block access to Web sites known to install spyware.
Spyware sometimes hide in shareware programs offered for download, so downloading programs only from reputable sources provides some protection from this source of attack.

Better Software Foundations

Posted by publisher | Antivirus | Friday 22 May 2009 4:12 pm

I visited the ruins of a Roman settlement, the other day that was set in a lovely valley in the middle of an island.
The setting was idyllic, sheltered from the winds and not too far from the main market town, it seemed an ideal spot to farm and bring up a family.
Its history was thoughtfully provided on signs around the ruins of a substantial dwelling, which had been expanded in Roman times to include a hot and cold bathroom and mosaic floors. All of this was very attractive and a considerable investment for the landowner. But the settlement was abandoned, and it occurred to me that there had to be a good reason since it was clear that someone had put a lot of effort and finance into their dream.
I wondered if Vikings, who were known to be active in this area after the Romans left, had attacked it but there were no signs of charred brick work or the aftermath of battle.
Looking around another sign revealed the problem. There had been more than one attempt to settle the area, but the land formed a natural point of drainage for the hills around, and successive buildings had each eventually succumbed to subsidence.
I was left in no doubt that the buildings were of a good quality and that the builders were competent at construction, but clearly it had taken a few generations to work out that this was not a suitable site for construction. If we really wanted to settle this place now we would drive piles deep into the ground to overcome the subsidence.
The point that this drove into my mind was that of developing software. It is all too often the case that Software development organizations and their customers make the same mistakes over again. If the foundations are shaky then there is no point in building, but with a little forethought someone will could solve the problem and provide a safe way of delivering a good foundation.
The biggest mistake that organizations make is to rush to cut code before they understand the problem they are solving. That doesn’t mean you have to be complacent and that sitting around in a few meetings will solve all your problems.
What should be done is: -Ring fence what you know.
Ring fence what you don’t know.
Make sure you are developing the right product. Build the software that you know will not change.
Check that what you are building is what is wanted.
Often the customer just doesn’t know exactly what they want, so you need to involve them in the development process. The earlier they get to know the product then the more likely they are to buy into the solution.
Having said all of that..
Code should be built where it enhances the understanding of the problem both to the customer and the developer.
